Sometimes consumer products have convenience features that greatly degrade our personal security. The “Home” feature of GPSs do exactly that.
Imagine this scenario:
Your car is stolen. You have a GPS. You are now stranded, filling out paperwork with the police. Meanwhile, the thief who stole your car turns on your GPS, hits destination “Home” and breaks into your home, robbing you blind. Time is taken with impunity, because he knows that you are with the police, doing paperwork.
Easy fix:
Set the “Home” setting on your GPS to an intersection near your home, or some other point-of-interest near your neighbour hood. Even better, don’t use it at all.
I like GPSs. I spend a lot of time on the road, and the ticker lets me know how much time I have before I get to the place I love most. My GPS is set to a nearby intersection. The time is about 30 seconds off, but I know that if it gets stolen, my family will be safe.
